About Gars

Tucked into Brighton's dining scene without the fanfare it deserves, this is a calm, grown-up Chinese restaurant that still makes room for children — high chairs, a kids' menu, vegan dishes and a few outdoor tables. The atmosphere is more tranquil than boisterous, which suits a family lunch better than a frantic one; traditional music plays quietly, and one visitor found it almost too sleepy. Staff are consistently warm, quick to squeeze in walk-ins when everywhere else is full, and happy to steer you towards the dim sum. The Peking duck with plum sauce, salt and pepper chicken, crispy pork bao and fall-off-the-bone BBQ ribs get the loudest praise, and side dishes are generous enough that you needn't over-order. Brighton prices apply, and recent visits have been less consistent, so it's worth booking and going in hungry.
