About The Waterguard

Tucked past the Senedd and a little apart from the Mermaid Quay crowd, this Sam Smith's pub rewards the extra five-minute walk along the bay. Inside it's a set of small rooms with two real fires — the wee front room is the one families angle for on a cold afternoon, with the sunset over the water through the window. Buggy access and high chairs are sorted, there's a kids' menu, board games and a pool table to fill the wait, and outdoor seating when the weather plays along. The fish and chips comes out on a hot plate with mushy peas, and the big fish and squid dish gets described as tasty and generous. It's cheerful and unhurried midweek and in winter; summer afternoons pack out and get loud. Dogs welcome, and staff are generally warm — though one parent found the door policy on toilets strictly customers-only.
