About The Old Joint Stock Pub & Theatre, Birmingham

A grand old stock exchange building with a domed, painted ceiling and a huge central bar — it's the kind of room children stare up at, which buys you a few quiet minutes. It's roomy and high-ceilinged rather than cramped, so a pram fits, and there's outdoor seating, high chairs and a kids' menu. The pies are the thing: chicken, bacon and leek gets the loudest praise, served with fresh veg and a little jug of red wine gravy that people rave about on its own. Sunday roasts come with proper homemade Yorkshires, and the brownie has saved more than one birthday. Two snags worth knowing: you order and pay at the bar, which isn't explained when you sit down and makes adding a dessert fiddly, and it fills up at lunch with city workers. Around £25 a head for main and pudding.
