Bar & grill · Southampton
Sitting right beside the Mayflower theatre, this is the pub half of Southampton seems to book before a show — and on theatre nights you genuinely need to reserve, because families do get turned away at the door. Come early enough and it works well with children: buggy access is straightforward, high chairs and a kids' menu are there, and the downstairs games room with darts, shuffleboard, table football and table tennis is free to use, which buys you a surprising amount of peace. The staff are warm and quick to rearrange tables for wheelchairs or prams. Food turns up hot and tasty, though on busy evenings you may be told to expect a half-hour wait, and desserts are big enough to share. Prices are reasonable, the mood cheerful, and it can get loud when a full house is singing along.

A little something creative for your next meal out. Filled with colouring, simple drawing prompts for cute animals, origami and conversation starters designed to bring more play, laughter and connection to the table. 3 free printable packs for toddlers, preschoolers and primary-aged children.
