A red-brick Victorian pub from 1888 that's kept its beautiful bones, this one works better for families than most city-centre boozers — there's buggy access, high chairs, a kids' menu, and plenty of seating out the back including small heated pods, which is where you'll want to be if the little ones need room to wriggle. It gets genuinely packed, so book ahead; Sunday roasts can be reserved online weeks in advance. The kitchen is on show and the cooking shows it — the panko fried chicken sandwich with chilli jam, pork belly, cheesy chips with boozy onions and sticky toffee pudding all get raved about. Portions are decent for the price. Fair warning: it's lively rather than quiet, the beer-led crowd means weekends are loud, and roasts have occasionally landed looking meaner than the next table's.
