Tucked at the edge of the city centre, this is a proper old-school freehouse — small, a bit ramshackle, with an open fire that makes winter afternoons feel easy. Downstairs is snug and dog-friendly with table service; the dining room upstairs is the calmer bet with children, all candles and warmth, and it can be booked out. The kitchen is the real surprise: Sunday roasts people rave about, with beef and porchetta both worth ordering, celeriac purée and red cabbage done properly, and cheesy-but-light rarebit or ham hock bon bons to start. Portions are generous for the price, and courses arrive at a sensible pace rather than a long wait. There's a kids' menu, high chairs and outdoor seating. It is genuinely small, though, so a pram is a squeeze at busy times — one to book.
