About The City Cafe

Just off the Royal Mile, this is a full-throttle American diner — red booths, a black-and-white floor, neon, a jukebox and an Elvis statue keeping watch over the pancakes. Children tend to love the spectacle, and the booths leave room to park a pram beside you; there are high chairs, a kids' menu and a few outdoor tables. Food arrives fast and hot, which matters when someone is melting down: big breakfasts, burgers that win over hard-to-please teenagers, and a Scottish fry-up one parent calls "exceptional". The milkshakes are basically a meal, and portions are generous for the price. It's lively rather than peaceful, busiest at weekends, the coffee is nothing special, and the loos can be hit and miss. A pool table and photo booth buy you a few extra minutes.
