About The Advocate

Upstairs-of-the-usual pub food in a room that doesn't cram tables on top of each other, which matters when you arrive with a buggy and a hungry four-year-old. Buggy access, high chairs and a kids' menu are all sorted, and the staff get the loudest praise here — chatty, welcoming whether it's your first visit or your fiftieth, and quick with the food when someone's patience is running out. The small sharing plates are the smart order with children: haggis fritters draw the most raving, alongside the steak and ale pie, fish and chips and haddock goujons, and three little dishes make a full meal for one adult. Prices are fair for Edinburgh. Two honest caveats: it can get busy around festival and tattoo season, and a few people have found the mains arriving lukewarm, so it's worth booking and checking what's actually on that day.
