Tucked in the Scottish Borders near Kelso, this is a husband-and-wife run place where the kitchen leans hard on local game and seasonal produce — goose, pheasant, pigeon, duck so tender one family couldn't stop talking about it, plus roasted carrots that somehow steal the show. Three courses and a drink can come in under £50 a head, which is fair for cooking this careful. It's small and relaxed rather than slick; the room could do with a freshen-up, and food takes a while to arrive, so bring something to occupy small hands. Buggy access, high chairs and a kids' menu are all sorted, there's outdoor seating and free parking, and the team treat every table the same. Booking is worth it. One family called a recent lunch simply "outstanding".
