About Spice Up Your Life

Tucked into St Nicholas Market, this is a family-run Punjabi kitchen that's been going nearly three decades, and the cooking tastes like it — properly homemade rather than restaurant-slick. Prices help enormously with children in tow: around £8 for a vegan curry of the day with a poppadom, and roughly £25 fed two adults generously. The kheema, the goat and the fluffy rice get named again and again, and the naan comes out fresh. Staff are patient and will happily talk you through the dishes, which matters when a child is dithering. Two warnings worth having: hot genuinely means hot, so order mild for little ones, and coriander goes on by default unless you say otherwise. Indoor seating in the atmospheric market hall fills fast — one regular says get there for noon — with a few tables outside on a quiet street.
