About Portuguese Taste

Tucked inside St Nicholas Market, this tiny Portuguese kitchen is more a counter with four tables — two in, two out — than a restaurant, so it suits a quick, cheap lunch rather than a long sit-down. Buggy access works and there are high chairs, but the market bustle means noise; that said, the surrounding hum covers a grumpy toddler nicely. Food comes out fast and tastes properly homemade: meatballs in a rich sauce with perfectly cooked rice, potato wedges, chicken piri piri, and a Friday fish stew regulars look forward to. Plenty of gluten-free options, card accepted, no alcohol. Pastéis de nata are the draw at around £1.50, though opinions split — one parent found theirs "next level", others thought the top under-caramelised. Tables are kept clean and the staff are friendly and quick.
