There's a lot going on inside these thick 16th-century stone walls, and one happy consequence is that it stays cool in summer — handy when you've got a hot, cross toddler. The breezy courtyard is the spot to aim for with a pram, and buggy access, high chairs and a kids' menu are all sorted, with free parking on site (plus more within a short walk). Staff are friendly and quick, and they'll usually find you a table even without booking. Food is properly Welsh and genuinely good: steak and ale pie with dragon mustard gravy, pork belly with perfect crackling, cockles and laverbread, sticky toffee pudding worth the wait. Pembroke Castle is basically across the road for running-around afterwards. One snag — that patio can get loud with drinkers on a warm evening.

A little something creative for your next meal out. Filled with colouring, simple drawing prompts for cute animals, origami and conversation starters designed to bring more play, laughter and connection to the table. 3 free printable packs for toddlers, preschoolers and primary-aged children.
