One of Brighton's oldest pubs, and it wears it well — arched walkways, a bright interior, and enough seating that a party of seven can be moved to a booth without fuss. That roominess matters with a pram, and buggy access and high chairs are sorted. The beer garden is the real draw for families: plenty of tables, all with heaters, so it works outside peak summer. The kitchen turns out proper food — the fish and chips get near-reverent praise for batter that stays crisp, the Sunday roast comes hot with thick gravy and no charge for more, and the hand-cut chips and mac and cheese have their own fans. Staff are consistently warm and attentive, and the toilets are clean. Two caveats: it's not cheap (around £6 a pint), and the outdoor area gets lively, so weekends are noisy.
