Big draw here is the outdoor space — loads of seating, some of it covered, plus a climbing frame and table tennis, so children can burn off energy while you finish a drink. Free parking, buggy access, high chairs and a kids' menu make the logistics easy. Inside it's full of character, with log fires and big TVs that show the football without any rowdiness. Food comes out fast, which matters when someone's melting down, and the menu is unusually long with plenty of specials: huge fish and chips, generous Sunday roasts, homemade curries on Thursdays at two for £20. Portions are big and prices reasonable. Dogs welcome too. It gets very busy on Friday nights and bank holidays, so book if you're bringing the whole family.

A little something creative for your next meal out. Filled with colouring, simple drawing prompts for cute animals, origami and conversation starters designed to bring more play, laughter and connection to the table. 3 free printable packs for toddlers, preschoolers and primary-aged children.
