Tucked behind stone walls in the middle of Edinburgh, this is a small, cosy independent that fills up fast — worth booking, because tables are squeezed in and walk-ins sometimes get a time limit. It's snug rather than roomy, so a pram may need parking by the door, but there are high chairs, a kids' menu and a few outdoor tables when the weather plays along. The steaks are the reason to come: Angus from a local butcher, fillet and ribeye done properly, with sides that aren't afterthoughts. The Cullen skink, haggis and lamb shank get just as much love, and the sticky toffee pudding is worth saving room for. Staff are warm and genuinely attentive — one parent noted even the people being turned away were treated kindly.
