An old Liverpool boozer just off Castle Street, all dark wood, wonky floors and centuries of history — the kind of place that feels calm mid-afternoon and lively by evening. The big covered courtyard at the back is the reason to bring children: plenty of seating, room to park a pram, and space for them to be a bit noisy without anyone minding. There's a kids' menu, high chairs and free parking, and level access in. Home-cooked pub food is the draw — the steak pies get particular praise, and the Scouse with chips is properly good, though at around £19 it isn't cheap, and the pints aren't either. Staff are friendly and unhurried; one family found them "very obliging". Inside can feel chilly, and food is served indoors only.
