About The World's End

Edinburgh's oldest pub sits on the Royal Mile with a cosy, properly old interior — low ceilings, tables close together, and a walk-in side plus a reservations side. Book if you can: turning up on spec often means a wait, and with children in tow that's the difference between a nice lunch and a meltdown. The kitchen is tiny but sends out hearty, generous plates — ale pie with cabbage, steak pie in merlot gravy, fish and chips with plenty of peas, and triple-fried chips that people talk about long after. There's a kids' menu and high chairs. Staff stay cheerful even when it's heaving, though one server can be covering the whole bar, so food isn't always quick. It's snug rather than roomy, so a pram is a squeeze; fold it if you can.
