About No. 1 High Street

A cosy pub-style spot near the train station and the Royal Mile, with warm wood, background music and often live playing — the kind of room that swallows a bit of toddler noise without anyone minding. Food is the reason to come: fish and chips gets the loudest praise (good portions, and it arrives with a little salad), plus bangers and mash, wings, nachos and a halloumi and orange salad that surprised people. There's a kids' menu and high chairs, and when the kitchen's on form plates come out fast and piping hot. Two honest snags: it's a small place, so a pram is a squeeze and it's worth booking; and service is a lottery — some families found the team genuinely friendly, others waited a long while just to be seen. Tourist-area prices too.
