Maxwells at Hickstead
A restaurant at the Showground with a full five-star rating so far and sensible mid-range prices for a family meal out.

Restaurant · Henfield
A country pub outside Henfield that manages to feel smart without being precious about children — wooden interiors, soft lighting, and enough room to park a buggy without apologising. There's free parking, high chairs and a kids' menu, plus outdoor seating in a garden that's honestly a bit tired compared to the food coming out of the kitchen. The Sunday roast is the draw: generous slices of beef, eight different vegetables, creamy cauliflower cheese, extra gravy brought to the table. The Thai green curry and the burgers get just as much praise, and portions are big for the price. Staff are attentive and quick to sort things out. Midweek you can walk in; weekends it gets rammed, so book. A public footpath starts at the pub, which is useful for burning off restless children beforehand.

A little something creative for your next meal out. Filled with colouring, simple drawing prompts for cute animals, origami and conversation starters designed to bring more play, laughter and connection to the table. 3 free printable packs for toddlers, preschoolers and primary-aged children.
