Walkers coming off the Pennine Trail near Oxspring have been ending up here for years, and it holds up just as well with children in tow — there's free parking, level access for a buggy, high chairs, and a homely, well-laid-out room with easy-to-reach toilets. Food is properly home cooked: meat and potato pie, cod loin done just right, chicken supreme with crisp skin, and puddings people talk about afterwards (panna cotta, hazelnut roulade, cherry cheesecake). Fish and chips comes in two sizes, which suits smaller appetites, and there's a good spread of gluten-free choices — one family had a mistaken order swapped without any fuss. Staff are warm with everyone, and one visitor was "welcomed like an old friend". Do book, especially at weekends; it fills up. The odd grumble is pale chips.
