Towards the top of Gloucester Road, this manages to be both a proper drinkers' local and somewhere you can happily bring the children for lunch. The big beer garden out the back is the real draw in warm weather, with room for a pram, and the inside is comfortable and spotlessly kept. Food arrives fast and hot even when it's busy — useful when someone's on the edge — portions are generous and prices fair. The veggie roast with its cauliflower tart, and the battered fish, get particular praise, though the meat roasts can be hit and miss. Staff are warm with children and dogs alike, and there's a kids' menu, high chairs and step-free access. Worth knowing: sport on the screens makes Friday evenings loud, and nearby spaces vanish at lunchtime. One family calls it "a gem hidden in plain sight".
