A proper countryside pub with grounds big enough that children can run off a Sunday roast — meadow, wildlife pond and a heated marquee that groups often take over so the little ones can play without bothering anyone else. The roasts are the thing to come for: crisp potatoes, rich gravy, proper cauliflower cheese, generous cuts of beef and turkey. Fish and chips get singled out too (the chips especially), and puddings are a real highlight — sticky toffee and lemon tart both come in for praise. Staff are young but attentive and unfussy about big family tables. High chairs, a kids' menu, vegan options, buggy access and free parking all make life easier. Worth knowing: service can drag when it's busy, and the steaks are pricey for what they are. Book at weekends.
