A proper old Victorian pub tucked near the old Exchange station, with different rooms, nooks and crannies and a beautiful ceiling — which in practice means you can usually find a corner where a noisy toddler won't feel like the main event. Buggy access, high chairs and a kids' menu are all sorted, and there's a small suntrap outdoor area for when everyone needs air. The scouse and the Moo & Blue pie get genuinely rhapsodic praise, as do the fish and chips and the three-course Sunday lunch, which one family called a bargain. Two honest snags: food can take a while at busy times, so bring something to occupy small hands, and parking nearby is app-only and pricey at around £6.50 for two hours — worth sorting before you set off.
