A cosy old-style pub with a proper restaurant attached, and the sort of place where a family table works without fuss — buggy access, high chairs, a kids' menu, free parking outside and a few outdoor tables when the weather plays along. The cooking is the draw: steaks done properly, fish with crisp skin, salmon in a sauce people finish to the last bite, quesadillas big enough to share, and a sticky toffee pudding that regulars rate highly. Portions are generous for the ££ price, and the staff are chatty and unhurried — good with allergies, with gluten- and dairy-free menus available. Worth knowing: the vegetarian menu leans heavily on fish, so strict veggie or vegan children may find slim pickings. There's live music some evenings, which is lovely but lively.

A little something creative for your next meal out. Filled with colouring, simple drawing prompts for cute animals, origami and conversation starters designed to bring more play, laughter and connection to the table. 3 free printable packs for toddlers, preschoolers and primary-aged children.
