Cafés · Wigton
Tucked by a stream on the edge of Wigton, this is the sort of café where you can park free, wheel a pram straight in and settle at an outdoor table while the children watch the water. The garden and landscaping are genuinely lovely, there are high chairs and a kids' menu indoors, and the food punches well above café standard — bacon rolls on brioche, proper butties with good-quality sausage, Caesar salad with homemade croutons, seasoned fries, big cups of excellent coffee and milkshakes families rate highly. Portions are generous and food comes out fast even when it's heaving, which it often is at weekends. Two snags: it's pricier than it looks (two lunches and drinks can top £40), and the staff are protective of the garden — worth a quiet word with children about staying off the walls and planting.

A little something creative for your next meal out. Filled with colouring, simple drawing prompts for cute animals, origami and conversation starters designed to bring more play, laughter and connection to the table. 3 free printable packs for toddlers, preschoolers and primary-aged children.
