A proper old Cornish-style pub on the edge of Plymouth, with a real log fire inside and — the bit that matters most with children — a beer garden with an enclosed play park and benches, so you can eat while keeping an eye on them. Buggy access is fine, there are high chairs and a kids' menu, and parking is free and plentiful. The views from the garden are genuinely lovely. Food is a mixed picture: on good days people rave about the roasts, the homemade beer-battered fish finger sandwich and slow-cooked pork belly, but the kitchen isn't always open, and some visits turn up only hot pasties, sausage rolls and bar snacks. Worth ringing ahead if you're counting on a meal. Dogs welcome, staff warm, and one parent calls it "a hidden gem".
