Tucked just off the main drag near the city centre, this is a quiet, intimate sort of place — the kind where you can hear each other over lunch rather than shout. It's proper Scottish cooking rather than pub standards: the Cullen Skink gets people coming back specially, and the haggis, neeps and tatties, fish and chips and Sunday roast (served late into the evening, handy if your afternoon has gone sideways) all draw praise, as does the panna cotta. There's a kids' menu, high chairs and outdoor seating, and the staff are warm and patient, including with dietary needs. Two lunch courses run £25 on weekdays, which softens prices that are otherwise a little steep. Worth knowing it's small and popular — on busy nights food and puddings can be slow, so book and go early with hungry children.
