Tucked between Pilton and Glastonbury, this is a proper old Somerset pub — sympathetically restored, low-key and characterful, with leather sofas that are far comfier than the slightly rickety dining chairs. Food comes out fast, which matters when someone small has run out of patience, and the team serving tables are cheerful and easy with guests, even if the bar can be slower and a bit chaotic. Sunday lunch is the thing to come for: the pork belly gets singled out as better than other roasts nearby, and breakfast (poached eggs on thick wholemeal toast) is a quiet gem. Plenty of gluten-free choice, vegan options and a kids' menu. Two honest snags — it's pricey, particularly puddings for the portion, and the drinks list is thin.
