Tucked down a Brighton backstreet a few minutes' walk from the station, this is the kind of proper old pub that has resisted being refurbished into blandness — dark, cosy, warm, with blues and rock drifting out of the speakers most afternoons. The kitchen is entirely vegan, and it's good enough that meat-eaters don't notice: the roast gets the most praise, with ham hock croquettes, proper vegetables, Yorkshires and gravy. There's a kids' menu, high chairs and outdoor seating for when little ones need air, and the staff are cheerful and quick. Prices are fair. Two honest caveats: Friday and Saturday nights get genuinely busy (there's often someone spinning vinyl), so lunchtimes and mid-afternoons suit families far better, and the loos have been described as rough round the edges.
