Small, old-school and properly cosy, with a famously loud patterned carpet, a free jukebox and a resident cat who's a bit of a local celebrity — usually good for ten minutes of distracted children. Table service only means everyone gets a seat rather than jostling at the bar, and there are high chairs, a kids' menu and a few tables outside for when the room feels tight. It is tight, mind: a pram is a squeeze in here, and larger groups aren't really welcome. The draw for grown-ups is the beer — unfiltered, hoppy local ales, a couple of them vegan-friendly. Worth knowing before you go: it's card only, evening service can leave you waiting a while for a drink, and Sunday nights are given over to live jazz from 8pm. Daytimes are quieter and quicker. One regular calls it a "home away from home".
