A proper country pub in the village of Bassingham, all log fire, traditional beams and quirky bits and pieces on the walls to keep small eyes busy while you wait. It's a relaxed, chatty sort of place rather than a hushed one, and the staff are friendly and quick even when it's heaving. There's a kids' menu, high chairs, buggy access, vegan choices and free parking, plus outdoor tables that suit warmer days and wriggly toddlers. The cooking is genuinely good — pulled pork bao buns, belly pork with proper crackling and a mountain of mash, steak and stilton crumble, dauphinoise potatoes, Sunday roasts. Portions are generous, so consider sharing with younger children. Do book, especially Sundays: it fills up completely, and one family called it "well worth driving an hour" for.

A little something creative for your next meal out. Filled with colouring, simple drawing prompts for cute animals, origami and conversation starters designed to bring more play, laughter and connection to the table. 3 free printable packs for toddlers, preschoolers and primary-aged children.
