Tucked into a Victorian corner of Shirley, this is a proper English pub with a Polish heart, and the combination works beautifully. Portions are enormous and the prices gentle — think pork schnitzel with big salads, minced meat pierogi, beetroot soup, chicken in mushroom sauce, and a Sunday roast that regulars come back for (extra veg and roast potatoes have been known to arrive without charge). It's cosy and clean rather than cavernous, with music on and staff who are quick and genuinely accommodating. High chairs, a kids' menu, buggy access and free parking all help, and there's outdoor seating when small people need air. Booking is wise at weekends, and the back function room can run chilly in winter — one visitor found their soup lukewarm as a result.
