About The Counting House

Housed in a grand old bank building, this one wins parents over before the food arrives — high ceilings, a domed roof and original banking features that give children something to crane their necks at while you wait. It's a Wetherspoons, so prices are low, there's a kids' menu, high chairs and buggy access, and food comes out fast even when the place is heaving, which matters when someone's hit the wall. Breakfasts are the draw, though go earlier rather than at the 11am rush when they can arrive lukewarm. Portions are solid rather than special: chicken strips, chips and curry sauce, a surprisingly decent halloumi and roasted veg salad. It gets busy and tables are hard to come by even midweek afternoons, and service can be slow to notice you at the bar. Outdoor seating helps on a good day.
