Sitting in the shadow of Nottingham Castle, this is a proper old English pub that turns out to be surprisingly easy with children in tow — one large group with young kids found the team "very accommodating", and the children's menu is genuinely reasonably priced rather than a token afterthought. High chairs, buggy access and a good spread of outdoor seating make warm-weather visits the sweet spot, with castle views from the tables outside. The food is a step above typical pub fare: the hog roast rarebit, lamb and mint pie, and a two-course Sunday roast around £20 all get praise, portions are generous, and there's a vegan wellington if you need it. Dogs are welcome inside too. Worth knowing: drinks are on the pricey side, and it can fill with stag parties at weekends.
