Set in a lovely spot by the river overlooking the church, this South Downs country pub has built its name on pizza — sourdough bases, generous toppings, fairly priced, and available to take away if nobody can face sitting still. Portions are big enough to share with a small person, and there's a kids' menu and high chairs if not. The garden is spacious, which is where families tend to head; inside is cosier but can be draughty near the door, so ask for a table by the fire in colder months. Staff are friendly and good-humoured, and it's relaxed rather than hushed. Breakfast and brunch are worth knowing about too — the brunch burger and the avocado and eggs both get praise. Buggy access is fine, and there's a decent-sized free car park across the road. One parent calls it a "little gem of pub".
