Set inside a grade II listed former police station from the 1850s, this is the kind of place where children end up wide-eyed rather than restless — the old cell doors are still on, and you can sit at a small table inside one, which turns a pint stop into something of an adventure. The staff are attentive and quick, coming to the table rather than making you queue at the bar with a pushchair in tow, and one visitor knocked a drink over and had it replaced without asking. There's a kids' menu, high chairs and a yard out the back with outdoor seating for warmer days. Worth knowing: the cells are genuinely small, it fills up from Friday teatime, and weekend stag groups can make it loud — an early afternoon visit suits families far better.
