The Dawnay Arms
A well-loved York pub with outdoor seating and a 4.6 Google rating, easygoing for a family meal out.

Restaurants · York
Tucked away in the pretty village of Nun Monkton just outside York, this is a proper country pub that's quietly turned into somewhere special — cows wander the lanes, willows droop over the duck pond, and inside the crockery and cutlery are smart without the place losing its old pub warmth. Sunday lunch is the one to come for: roast chicken and stuffing, pork with crackling and apple sauce, everything cooked properly. The firecracker shrimp starter gets mentioned again and again. Staff are friendly and unpretentious and keep things moving even when it's full. Practical bits: high chairs, a kids' menu, buggy access, outdoor seating and free parking. Two honest snags — you really do need to book, and it isn't cheap. It can get very loud at busy times too, particularly near the bar.
