Tucked into a handsome old Edinburgh pub, with the restaurant up on the second floor and the bar below, this is a warmer spot for a family meal than the grand frontage suggests. Buggy access and high chairs are there, plus a kids' menu and a few outdoor tables, and staff are consistently described as patient and genuinely helpful — the sort who'll talk you through the menu without rushing. Portions are generous: the steak and ale pie gets the most love, along with fish and chips, haggis and neeps (there's a vegetarian version too) and beef ragu tagliatelle. One parent raved about the gravy. Sticky toffee pudding is the pick of the desserts. It fills up fast, especially Fridays and weekends, so book ahead — and popular dishes do occasionally sell out.
