The Abbotsford Bar & Restaurant
Handsome old Edinburgh pub with an upstairs dining room, generous steak pie, patient staff and high chairs — book ahead.

There's a proper grown-up restaurant feel here — elegant, dimly handsome, with a big bar where the cocktail-making is a show in itself — but the practicals are sorted for families: high chairs, a kids' menu, buggy access and vegan options. It's roomy enough that a busy room still feels relaxed rather than frantic, and the staff are consistently kind, including with dietary requests (halal has been accommodated without fuss). Food arrives fast, which matters when patience is thin. Parents rave about the lasagne, the seafood pastas, the king prawns and generous portion sizes, and everyone says leave room for pudding. Two honest notes: the carbonara divides opinion — one visitor found the sauce floury and heavy — and on a busy Sunday the bill can take a while. Worth booking, and the outdoor tables are lovely in decent weather.
