A restored first-class dining carriage sitting on the old tracks at Bellingham Station is a properly novel place to bring children — they get the train, you get comfy seats and tea in old-fashioned china cups. There are high chairs and a kids' menu, buggy access into the carriage, free parking, and a covered outdoor area if you've a dog or a pram that won't fit. Inside has plenty of tables. The afternoon tea is the draw: freshly made sandwiches, cheese or fruit scones, and so much cake they hand out boxes for the leftovers. The carrot cake and the cheese-and-bacon toastie get real praise, and portions are generous. Service is warm but can be slow when it's busy, and cake slices are pricey for the size. Nice local walks nearby afterwards.

A little something creative for your next meal out. Filled with colouring, simple drawing prompts for cute animals, origami and conversation starters designed to bring more play, laughter and connection to the table. 3 free printable packs for toddlers, preschoolers and primary-aged children.
