Right on the canal in the city centre, this is a proper traditional boozer with picnic tables outside — the kind of spot that comes into its own on a warm afternoon when the children can spread out a bit and you're not squeezing a pram between tables. Inside is cosy and often genuinely quiet on weekday afternoons, which is handy if noise is a factor. There's a kids' menu, high chairs and step-free access, and the food gets real praise: a steak and ale pie cooked properly, a lasagne worth going back for, big hot portions that pleased a whole family. Staff are warm and unfazed — one family had a dish smashed by a rogue seagull and found nothing was too much bother. Worth knowing: it's one bar, sometimes stretched thin, so service can be slow at busy moments, and it runs late and lively at weekends with karaoke upstairs.

A little something creative for your next meal out. Filled with colouring, simple drawing prompts for cute animals, origami and conversation starters designed to bring more play, laughter and connection to the table. 3 free printable packs for toddlers, preschoolers and primary-aged children.
