Perched above Coniston Water on a working farm, this is the kind of stop where children can actually breathe out — plenty of room to roam, games provided, and a big outdoor seating area with the lake and fells laid out in front of you. Buggy access and free parking make the arrival easy, and there are high chairs, a kids' menu and vegan options once you're in. The cakes and scones are the draw, baked fresh each morning and served help-yourself with proper jam and cream; the home-reared lamb and Aberdeen Angus beef, steak ciabatta and brunch plates all get real praise. Staff are warm and unhurried with families. It is pricey for what it is, and one parent who said as much still called the food "worth it".

A little something creative for your next meal out. Filled with colouring, simple drawing prompts for cute animals, origami and conversation starters designed to bring more play, laughter and connection to the table. 3 free printable packs for toddlers, preschoolers and primary-aged children.
