About Small Town Boy

Tucked down a small alley in the university district, this is a tiny place — a handful of seats downstairs and a small area upstairs — so it suits one child in a sling or a toddler on your knee more than a double buggy at full stretch. There are chairs outside opposite the café, which is where most families end up on a decent day. The coffee is the draw, hand-crafted and taken seriously; the ginger cake, the toasties and the kimchi grilled cheese all get singled out, and the bakery counter changes regularly. Matcha and ube lattes for anyone off caffeine. High chairs, a kids' menu, Wi-Fi and a loo are all there. The staff are unhurried and kind — one visitor was left to nurse a single coffee for hours without a word. It does get crowded, so time it carefully.
