About Rani Indian Restaurant, Newcastle Upon Tyne

Punjabi cooking done properly, and the room helps — tables are spaced far enough apart that even two large groups in at once doesn't feel cramped, so there's space to park a pram beside you without blocking anyone. High chairs and a kids' menu are there, and the staff are consistently described as warm and unhurried, happy to talk you through the menu and suggest something milder if the chef's special spice is too much of a kick for small mouths. Drinks and food arrive quickly, which matters when someone's patience is running out. The dal makhni is beautifully smooth, the vegetable pakoras get a lot of love, and the amritsari curry is a favourite. Worth knowing: the three-course early evening menu at £19.95 is excellent value, but it ends at 7pm, so you'll need to get in sharpish.
