Tucked on the edge of Bannau Brycheiniog, this 17th-century pub has something most places can't offer: a small rescue zoo out the back (around £3 to visit) with wallabies, pygmy goats, meerkats and parrots — enough to buy you a whole meal's peace. Inside there's dining downstairs and up in a gallery room, a log fire, and big beer gardens front and back with proper views. High chairs, buggy access and free parking are all sorted, though the car park can be a tight squeeze. The kids' menu is genuinely cooked, not reheated — think chicken curry with rice, chips and a poppadum around £8.50 — and portions for adults are generous. It's a touch pricey and worth booking, especially at weekends. Staff are warm and unhurried; one parent calls it "a hidden gem".
