A proper old Manchester chop house, all dark wood and tiled walls, and one of the few places in the city centre that feels like somewhere rather than anywhere. It's narrow, though — worth knowing if you're arriving with a pram, and worth booking so you're not squeezed into a corner at the back. High chairs and a kids' menu are there, along with vegan options, and the welcome is generally warm and quick off the mark. The fish and chips get the loudest praise, with portions described as huge, and there's enough on the menu to keep everyone happy. Two honest caveats: it's not cheap for what is essentially very good pub food, and service can slow right down when the place is full or a big event is on in town.
