Fine Dining · Edinburgh
Tucked below a vined alley and down a flight of stairs, this basement dining room is darker and quieter than a family lunch usually calls for — but the staff make it work, and there's a kids' menu, high chairs and a few outdoor seats if you'd rather be above ground. It suits an occasion more than a scramble: a birthday, a grandparent visit, a Sunday roast when the children are old enough to sit. The haggis starter gets rhapsodic praise, as does the black pudding with scallops, the venison, the fillet with its fried potatoes, and the pan-roasted salmon and seabass. Be warned it's a proper spend and Sunday roast portions run small; one family found the seating cramped when tables were tight. Book, come early, and let the team steer you — they're patient and full of good advice.

A little something creative for your next meal out. Filled with colouring, simple drawing prompts for cute animals, origami and conversation starters designed to bring more play, laughter and connection to the table. 3 free printable packs for toddlers, preschoolers and primary-aged children.
