Monteiths
An elegant basement restaurant for special-occasion family meals — famous haggis, kind staff, kids' menu and high chairs, though it's pricey and dark.

Café · Edinburgh
Breakfast is the thing here — plates arrive fast and beautifully turned out, with little edible flowers and generous portions that mean nobody's left picking at a side. There's a kids' menu, high chairs and a few outdoor tables, plus proper vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free choices; the kitchen takes allergies seriously enough to sticker plates, though one family found a server twice forgot to pass the message on, so say it clearly and check. The room is cosy rather than sprawling, so a big pram may be awkward at busy times. Sitting on the Royal Mile it fills up: arrive around 8am and you'll walk straight in, otherwise expect a wait. Staff are warm and quick even when it's heaving, and prices are fair for the location — one visitor called the breakfast better than a five-star hotel's.

A little something creative for your next meal out. Filled with colouring, simple drawing prompts for cute animals, origami and conversation starters designed to bring more play, laughter and connection to the table. 3 free printable packs for toddlers, preschoolers and primary-aged children.
