Italian on the Mound
A well-loved Edinburgh café with a 4.6 rating and relaxed, mid-range vibe — an easy stop with the family.

Scottish · Edinburgh

Just off the Royal Mile, this is a cosy, buzzing spot doing Scottish comfort food — mash, haggis, neeps and tatties — in genuinely big portions, and it's popular enough that you should plan around the wait. Booking ahead is the sane option with children; there's a separate door for walk-ins, where you're put on a list and called back, often an hour or more at peak times. Come after the lunch rush and it's much easier. The lamb and pork with mash get the loudest praise, and the mushrooms too — they grow their own Lion's Mane, visible on the corridor to the toilets. There's a proper vegan haggis, a kids' menu, high chairs and a few outdoor tables. It's not a big room, so it's snug rather than roomy, but the staff are warm and service is quick once you're seated.

A little something creative for your next meal out. Filled with colouring, simple drawing prompts for cute animals, origami and conversation starters designed to bring more play, laughter and connection to the table. 3 free printable packs for toddlers, preschoolers and primary-aged children.
