Big wall-to-wall windows make this a bright, easy place to land with children, even on a grey Edinburgh morning — the room is spacious, so a pram isn't a problem, and the bathrooms are unusually large, which matters when you're changing a nappy in a café. Food comes out fast and rich rather than heaped: pancakes, gluten-free french toast with caramelised bananas, wild mushroom on toast, house-baked bread and scones people genuinely rave about, plus proper vegan and vegetarian options. There's a kids' menu, high chairs, and a few outdoor tables. The staff are patient and attentive. Two honest snags: it's not cheap (a full Scottish runs around £18.50) and it gets busy, so book — one visitor only got a table because the front of house squeezed them in.
